Pierre es un veterano de Vietnam angustiado por su responsabilidad en la muerte accidental de una niña vietnamita como consecuencia de un aterrizaje forzoso. Secrets de tournage:
- A l'origine... Le réalisateur Serge Bourguignon, qui est également scénariste du film, explique qu'il s'est inspiré pour écrire cette histoire, de deux individus particuliers, dont un des deux a réellement existé. Le premier était un militaire chef d'escadrille qui, après avoir croisé une petite fille dans son champ de vision, a démissionné de l'armée pour partir à la recherche de l'enfant. Le second était le personnage fictif d'un roman, un gangster devenu amnésique pourchassé par ses anciens collègues et dont la fille fut placée dans un orphelinat.
- Un succès international. Malgré la qualité du film, aucun français n'a voulu courir le risque de le distribuer... C'est grâce à l'américain Richard Davis, qui acheta les droits du film, que Les dimanches de Ville d'Avray a pu être projeté en avant première mondiale à New York. Le succès fut immédiat, tant d'un point de vue critique que commercial, ce qui poussa les cinémas parisiens à se rattraper, en diffusant le film dans cinq grandes salles.

- Un Oscar. Le film de Serge Bourguignon a obtenu l'Oscar du meilleur film étranger en 1963.
- Le roman. Les Dimanches de ville d'Avray est un film inspiré du roman du même nom écrit par Bernard Eschassériaux. Cet écrivain a également participé à l'écriture du scénario et des dialogues du film. Le roman ne fut publié qu'en 1971, donc plusieurs années après la sortie du film.
- Un lieu. Ville-d'Avray est une commune française, située dans le département des Hauts-de-Seine et la région Île-de-France. Ses habitants sont appelés les Dagovéraniens.
- 2ème collaboration. Serge Bourguignon retrouve son ami Henri Decaë, le directeur de la photographie avec qui il avait déjà travaillé sur Les Enfants terribles de Jean-Pierre Melville en 1949 (Serge Bourguignon y était assistant réalisateur).

AMG SYNOPSIS: Sundays and Cybele (original French title: Les Dimanches de Ville D'Avray) stars Hardy Kruger as a former bomber pilot. Emotionally shattered by a tragic wartime incident, Kruger goes into semi-seclusion in a small Parisian suburb. He is drawn out of his shell by 12-year-old orphan girl Patricia Gozzi. The nuns in charge of Patricia bless the relationship, assuming that Kruger is the girl's father. A warm, chaste friendship develops between the older man and the bright-eyed girl, culminating in their mutual decision to spend Christmas together in a nearby woods. Unfortunately, nurse Nicole Courcel, suspecting that Kruger is a pedophile, calls the police--a move that can only result in disaster for all concerned. Based on a novel by Bernard Eschasseriaux, the exquisitely photographed Sundays and Cybele won the 1962 Best Foreign Film Academy Award. -- Hal Erickson

AMG REVIEW: There are imperfections to Sundays and Cybele that keep the film from being a top-notch piece of early-'60s French cinema. The story of a girl abandoned by her father is given to some contrived melodrama; the manifestations of lead character Hardy Kruger's mental illness are a bit hammy, both in terms of how they're cinematically portrayed and how they're acted out; and the indulgent way his nurse lover forgives and overlooks his instability can strain credibility. Yet the movie has enough going for it to make it worthy of attention, particularly in the excellent black-and-white cinematography. Too, as the abandoned 12-year-old, Patricia Gozzi gives a credible if sentimental performance that does much to hold the film together, especially considering that she's more likable and less caricatured than the adult characters. The scenes in which she and Kruger help each other negotiate the damaging disappointments of their past are the heart of the movie, achieving some touching nuances in its portrayal of the healing relationship between unlikely characters drawn together by circumstance. It doesn't make their scenario as cut-and-dried as two people whose affection is misunderstood and destroyed by a cruel uncomprehending world, either. It raises some rumbling uncertainties as to just how healthy their interaction is and how it strains acceptable social limits, leaving it up to the viewer to ponder just how much the relationship should be tolerated, though the section in which the authorities close in on Kruger is among the film's weaker ones. -- Richie Unterberger
