Sinopsis:
- Primera parte de la trilogía autobiográfica de Bill Douglas sobre el hecho de crecer en un pueblo pobre de Escocia dedicado a la minería. La penuria, tanto emocional como física, es retratada con libertad, ayudándose de actores locales y no profesionales.
AMG SYNOPSIS: My Childhood is an award-winning black-and-white film which recounts director Bill Douglas' experiences as a child in Scotland during World War II. The movie was shot in the same locations he lived in as a boy. In the film, the boy lives with his half-brother and grandmother in a remote mining village. The bleakness of their lives is brightened by their friendship with a German P.O.W. This short film is the first of three dealing with director Douglas' Scottish childhood. En BFI se escribió:Douglas's remarkable trilogy of powerful films of childhood and youth display an original and powerful artistic vision. The narrative arc is biographical; in Jamie, we embark on a journey into the artist's experience, growing up in a poverty-stricken mining village in the post-war era, at the mercy of brutal, loveless surroundings and the relatives and neighbours responsible for his welfare. But these films are not a depressing experience. Jamie is a survivor, bold and curious, and his story is ultimately redemptive. The cinematography is beautiful, creating visual poetry from startling, bleak monochrome images. When Bill Douglas died in 1991, British cinema lost one of its most original, and neglected artists.
- "My Childhood" (1972). Set in 1945, the first part of Douglas’ triptych revisits his impoverished childhood, living with his grandmother and half-brother in the Scottish mining village of Newcraighall. The austere but beautiful black-and-white camerawork perfectly captures the harsh realities of an existence which finds the eight-year-old Jamie often taking solace from the movies. — Geoff Andrew.

Though life becomes even harder for Jamie, so that he eventually ends up in a none-too-comforting children’s home, the bold, uncompromising assurance of Douglas’ very personal brand of realism ensures that the film effortlessly avoids the pitfalls of sentimentality or self-pity. Rather, it is so firmly grounded in specific memories that the boy’s experiences feel quite universal in their relevance. — Geoff Andrew.
- "My Way Home" (1978). Old enough to work, Jamie leaves the children's home to live with his paternal grandmother, but is soon conscripted into the RAF. Ironically, military service in Egypt brings a sense of freedom and friendship unimaginable in earlier years… Having refused to soft-pedal on life’s hardships, Douglas here achieves a very deep and genuine sense of release, compassion and redemption.— Geoff Andrew.
