[fuente] Basada en un relato de Rabindranath Tagore ambientado a finales del siglo XIX, cuando la India era todavía una colonia inglesa. Charu, una mujer de la alta sociedad bengalí que lleva una vida ociosa, está casada con Bhupati. Éste, que ha heredado una fortuna, utiliza su dinero para publicar un periódico político, y se siente orgulloso de no haberse dejado arrastrar por la comodidad y la desidia.

En "La mujer sola", en DeCine21, se escribió:Charulata es una mujer inteligente y culta, sin hijos, que vive en Calcuta en el siglo XIX, cuando la India es una colonia británica. Desde hace unos años está casada con Bhupati, un hombre de clase alta, más preocupado por el periódico que publica que por atender a su esposa, a pesar de que está muy enamorado de ella. Como está sola todo el día, y las tareas del hogar las realizan los sirvientes, Charulata se aburre. Su marido decide invitar a su casa a su hermano, con el que comparte la afición a la poesía. Entre Charulata y su cuñado surgirá el amor.

El director japonés Akira Kurosawa dijo una vez: "No haber visto el cine de Satyajit Ray es como existir en este mundo y no haber visto el sol o la luna". Tal elogio parece bastante justificado a tenor de películas como este sentido drama sobre las relaciones conyugales y la infidelidad, contado con tal elegancia y sutileza que parece increíble que las imágenes sean tan expresivas, y logren narrar tantas cosas sólo a través de miradas y gestos. Resulta maravilloso el modo en que se plasma la creatividad de Charulata a la hora de dar rienda suelta a su talento literario; o la "ceguera" de un marido tan metido en el "juguete" de su periódico y la política que no sabe detectar y resolver los problemas que tiene en casa.

Gran trabajo de Madhabi Mukherjee (la protagonista) y del resto del reparto, con prodigioso uso de la música por parte del propio Ray. Se basa en el relato Nastanirh, de Rabindranath Tagore.

Salvajit Ray, sobre "Charulata", escribió:Si tuviese la oportunidad de realizarla de nuevo, la haría exactamente de la misma manera.

AMG SYNOPSIS: This film by Satyajit Ray, India's most renowned filmmaker, tells the story of Charu (Madhabi Mukherjee), a woman in late 19th-century Calcutta. She is neglected by her busy husband, Bhupati (Shailen Mukherjee), a politically active newspaper publisher. When Bhupati's younger cousin Amal (Soumitra Chatterjee), a sensitive, intellectual student on break from the university, comes for an extended visit, Charu enjoys Amal's company, and the two while away the hours in conversation. But as their relationship grows closer, Charu falls in love with Amal. The film, based on a popular Indian novel, marks a significant point in Ray's career, as it bears the influence of Western film on his directorial style. Shown at the 1965 Berlin Film Festival, the film was curiously and inexplicably rejected by the committee at the Cannes Film Festival. -- Jonathan E. Laxamana

AMG REVIEW: Satyajit Ray's Charulata, one of the films of which the director was most proud, begins and ends with two sequences of beautiful, and justly praised, cinematic poetry. The film opens on Charu (Madhabi Mukherjee), a sheltered 19th century housewife, viewing the world outside her bedroom windows through a pair of opera glasses. She then goes into the hallway, where her husband, Bhupati (Sailen Mukherjee), walks by absorbed in a book. As he walks away she turns her opera glasses on him. This dialogue-less sequence deftly establishes her character and her relationship to the world and her husband. The film's famous conclusion, a series of freeze frames, beautifully crystallizes their now greatly changed relationship. Between these two points, Charu will transform herself from traditional, kept housewife to modern woman, with the help of Bhupati's brother, the charmingly wayward poet Amal (Soumitra Chatterjee). Filled with moments that can only be called "pure cinema," Charulata is both the story of a love triangle and a microcosm of a traditional society moving slowly and painfully into modernity. -- Tom Vick
