Sinopsis:
- En Nuschimango, Veracruz, México, los pescadores que trabajan diez horas diarias, comienzan a sentir que lo que les paga don Anselmo -el rico comerciante de la región-, no les alcanza ni siquiera para cubrir sus necesidades diarias y entonces deciden reclamar un mejor pago por su pescado, pero ante la negativa del acaparador comerciante, Miro (Silvio Hernández), un joven pescador, se propone unirlos para oponerse a la explotación... pero don Anselmo está dispuesto a aplicar una regla del juego: "Divide y reinarás".
Comentario personal:
- Rodado en la frontera entre la ficción y el documental y muy influido por el estilo de Flaherty, este film encargado por el Gobierno mexicano, basado en una idea original de Paul Strand y filmado entre 1934 y 1936, cuenta la historia de un grupo de pescadores de Alvarado, en Veracruz (México) que se subleva contra los mayoristas que les compran el pescado a muy bajos precios.
AMG SYNOPSIS: Having studied at the right hand of famed documentarian Robert Flaherty, young aspiring director Fred Zinneman was eminently qualified to collaborate on the direction of the Mexican "actuality" film The Wave (aka Redes). The film was the brainchild of New York-based photographer-documentary producer Paul Strand, who wrote the script and shared directorial credit with the fledgling Zinneman. Filmed on location in Vera Cruz from 1934 to 1935, the continuity follows a group of peasant fisherman as they come to grips with being exploited by local business interests. Strand concentrated on most of the documentary aspects of the film, shooting endless footage of fisherman at work and play, while Zinneman selected the principal actors and handled the dramatic scenes. The Wave was intended as the first in a series on Mexican life, but the money and distributor support just wasn't there; in retrospect, however, Fred Zinneman did pretty well for himself all the same. -- Hal Erickson
Fred Zinnemann escribió:The film – the first (and last) of its kind – was expected to play a small part in the Government’s plan to educate millions of illiterate citizens throughout the enormous country and bring them out of their isolation. […] The picture was to be made for the Federal Department of Fine Arts, headed by composer Carlos Chávez. The producer would be Paul Strand. […] We had recruited practically all ‘actors’ from among the local fishermen, who needed to do no more than be themselves. They were splendid and loyal friends, and working with them was a joy. In addition to acting, they carried all the equipment, rowed the boats and did a multitude of other jobs, earning more money than ever before – forty-five cents per day, per man – and enjoying themselves hugely. […] I’m told that some years later the Nazis found the negative in Paris and burned it. A few prints still exist.
