Cuenta la historia de un triángulo amoroso entre un profesor de piano puritano y conservador, su esposa aparentemente ideal y la taciturna sirvienta de la casa. En 2010, el director surcoreano Lim Sang-soo realizó un remake con Jeon Do-yeon y Lee Jeong-jae en los papeles principales.

Suite à un déménagement dans une maison plus grande, la femme d'un professeur de musique persuade celui-ci d'engager une domestique. Mais bientôt, la servante devient la maîtresse et la calme maison devient alors le lieu d'un dramatique huis clos. (Allociné)

Secrets de tournage:
- La restauration. Datant des années 60, la pellicule de La Servante a été délabrée au point que les sous-titres occupaient finalement la moitié de l'image. Le film n’était alors diffusé que dans une version tronquée de deux séquences. Grâce au soutien de la World Cinema Foundation, le Korean Film Archive a réussi à restaurer la copie du film et à rétablir toutes les parties abimées : "Je suis fier que la World Cinema Foundation ait joué un rôle dans la restauration et la préservation de cette œuvre remarquable. J’ai hâte que de nouveaux spectateurs découvrent et se mettent à aimer La Servante", confie Martin Scorsese, fondateur de l'organisation.
- Remake. Kim Ki-Young a lui-même tourné deux remakes de La Servante: La Femme de feu (1970) et La Femme de feu-82 (1982). En 2010, le film a également inspiré le réalisateur sud-coréen Im Sang-soo qui en a fait un troisième remake, intitulé The Housemaid comme l'original.
- Eun-shim Lee. La servante est interprétée par Eun-shim Lee, qui signe ici son seul et unique rôle.
- Une référence! Ce film est une référence incontournable dans le cinéma coréen des années 60. Parmi les réalisateurs qu'il a beaucoup influencés, on peut citer Park Chan-wook, le réalisateur de Old Boy et Kim Ki-duk, celui de Printemps, été, automne, hiver... et printemps.

Notes on the restoration.
Restored in 2008 by the Korean Film Archive and the World Cinema Foundation at HFR Laboratory, Seoul.
Hanyo has been restored digitally by the Korean Film Archive (KOFA) with the support of the World Cinema Foundation. The original negative of the film was found in 1982 with two missing reels, 5 and 8. In 1990 an original release print with hand-written English subtitles was found and used to complete the copy. This surviving print was highly damaged, and the English subtitles occupied almost half of the frame area. The long and complex restoration process has involved the use of a special subtitle-removal software and included flicker and grain reduction, scratch and dust removal, color grading.
