Sinopsis:
- En un pequeño pueblo de Castilla, a mediados de la década de 1940 y en plena postguerra, Isabel y Ana, dos hermanas de ocho y seis años respectivamente, ven un domingo la película "El Doctor Frankenstein". A la pequeña la visión del film le causa tal impresión que no dejaba de hacer preguntas sobre el monstruo a su hermana mayor.

Los niños están fascinados por el monstruo y, entre ellos, la pequeña Ana, de 8 años, se plantea mil y una cuestión sobre este personaje terrorífico. Su hermana mayor, Isabel, le explica que no es más que un "truco" del cine, pero ella sigue creyendo haber encontrado el espíritu de Frankenstein que merodea por el pueblo.
Las muchachas comparten su soledad en una casa oscua. Sus padres raramente están presentes, a través de rituales incomprensibles: el padre, insomne, pasa sus días estudiando las abejas, arreglando la casa familiar como si fuera una colmena; la madre se refugió en una nostalgia estéril, redactando cartas a un amante que permanece invisible y silencioso. Para evitar este mundo de muertos, Ana e Isabel se inventan un universo paralelo.
Juntas, las dos hermanas salen a explorar los alrededores del pueblo, descubriendo una vieja casa abandonada al pie de una colina, cercana a un pozo misterioso. Las chicas descubren, a través de sus juegos y de las historias que se cuentan, un mundo sombrío y maravilloso, frecuentado por personajes imaginarios que sólo los niños pueden percibir. Un día, Ana encuentra a un hombre herido que se refugió en la casa abandonada...
En Allociné se escribió:Espagne, 1940; peu après la fin de la guerre civile. Un cinéma itinérant projette Frankenstein dans un petit village perdu du plateau castillan. Les enfants sont fascinés par le monstre et, parmi eux, la petite Ana, 8 ans, se pose mille et une questions sur ce personnage terrifiant. Sa grande soeur, Isabel, a beau lui expliquer que ce n'est qu'un ''truc'' de cinéma, elle prétend pourtant avoir rencontré l'esprit de Frankenstein rôdant non loin du village.
Les filles partagent leur solitude dans une grande maison obscure. Leurs parents sont rarement présents, pris chacun dans des rituels adultes incompréhensibles : le père, insomniaque, passe ses journées à étudier les abeilles, arrangeant la maison familiale comme si c'était une ruche ; la mère, quant à elle, s'est réfugiée dans une nostalgie stérile, rédigeant des lettres à un prétendu amant qui demeure invisible et silencieux. Pour fuir ce monde mort, Ana et Isabel s'inventent un univers parallèle.
Ensemble, les deux soeurs partent explorer les alentours du village, découvrant une vieille maison abandonnée au pied d'une colline, avoisinant un puits mystérieux. Les filles découvrent, par leurs jeux et les histoires qu'elles se racontent, un monde sombre, merveilleux, hanté par des figures imaginaires que seuls les enfants peuvent apercevoir. Un beau jour, Ana trouve un homme blessé qui s'est réfugié dans la maison abandonnée...
Secrets de tournage:
- Découverte. L'Esprit de la ruche a permis au public de connaître le réalisateur Victor Erice qui signait avec ce long métrage sa première expérience d'écriture scénaristique et sa seconde réalisation, dix ans après Los Dias Perdidos (1963).
- Une petite fille. Ana Torrent a été révélée à sept ans par L'Esprit de la ruche trois ans avant son rôle marquant dans Cria Cuervos de Carlos Saura en 1976.
- La photo. Lors du tournage, le directeur de la photographie, Luis Cuadrado commençait à perdre la vue.
- Histoire d'Espagne. Tourné en 1973, lors des dernières années du régime de Franco, l'action de L'Esprit de la ruche se déroule à la fin de la guerre civile espagnole.
AMG SYNOPSIS: Widely regarded as a masterpiece of Spanish cinema, this allegorical tale is set in a remote village in the 1940s. The life in the village is calm and uneventful -- an allegory of Spanish life after General Franco's victory in the Spanish Civil War. While their father (Fernando Fernán Gómez) studies bees in his beehive and their mother (Teresa Gimpera) writes letters to a non-existent correspondent, two young girls, Ana (Ana Torrent) and Isabel (Isabel Telleria), go to see James Whale's Frankenstein at a local cinema. Though they can hardly understand the concept, both girls are deeply impressed with the moment when a little girl gives a flower to the monster. Isabel, the older sister, tells Ana that the monster actually exists as a spirit that you can't see unless you know how to approach him. Ana starts wandering around the countryside in search of the kind creature. The film received critical accolades for its subtle and masterful use of cinematic language and the expressive performance of the young Ana Torrent. -- Yuri German
AMG REVIEW: Director Victor Erice's films, with his painterly images, languid pace, and patient working methods (three films in the past 30 years), are reminiscent of the lyricism of Terrence Malick. The Spirit of the Beehive is about a little girl who, in the child's dreamy desire to make sense of her world, constructs a Frankenstein monster of both benevolence and violence. Its depiction of childhood is tender, the story simple and clear. Yet what makes the film so gorgeously affecting is its summoning of a difficult to grasp intensity beneath its placid surface, where emotional extremes take on a supernatural aura and hover in the chest like a thick tremulous cloud. Realizing one's "spirit" involves a melancholy understanding of life's random potential for joy and sorrow and that the switch can be sudden, as when the Frankenstein monster switches from playing with to killing a child. This amalgam of conflicting emotions comes from humanity and yet seems to operate from without, and is a wonderful metaphor for the swirl surrounding war. (The Spanish Civil War has ended but the stink still hangs in the air like an uneasy mist.) Ana's spirit is her own, but the title refers to the universality of this essence. With her wide and brown-as-a-chestnut eyes and shyly bold demeanor, Ana Torrent is exceptional as Ana. In her search for the spirit she registers the complicated layers of a child realizing death. Erice elicits another fantastic young performance from Isabel Telleria, who plays Ana's older sister Isabel with a mischievous, vaguely menacing air. Achieving a beauty of ache-inducing intensity, cinematographer Luis Cuadrado shoots the Castilian village and countryside using astounding gradations of wheat and amber colors. -- Michael Buening
