Después de quince años de servicio, Henri Boulanger es despedido de su trabajo. Conmocionado, intenta suicidarse, pero no es capaz de hacerlo, así que contrata a un asesino a sueldo en un sórdido bar para que lo mate en algún momento indeterminado del futuro. Pero casi de inmediato conoce y se enamora de Margaret, una florista, que hace que Henri se cuenta de que su vida aún tiene sentido. Pero cuando vuelve al bar para cancelar el contrato, descubre que ha sido demolido y que no hay forma de ponerse en contacto con el asesino. Tras la trilogía proletaría, Aki Kaurismäki continuó con dos películas filmadas en el extranjero y en otros idiomas. El universo de estas historias, sin embargo, es indudablemente tan Kaurismäki con el de sus películas rodadas en Finlandia.

Shocked, he attempts suicide, but can't go through with it, so he hires a contract killer in a seedy bar to murder him at some unspecified time in the future. But almost immediately he meets and falls in love with Margaret, a flower-seller, which makes Henri realise that his life has some meaning after all. But when he goes back to the bar to cancel the contract, he finds it has been demolished - and there's no way he can get in touch with the killer...

AMG SYNOPSIS: In this Finnish comedy, which features all-English dialogue and nary a Scandanavian in it, Henri Boulanger (Jean-Pierre Leaud), is a colorless English civil servant, who was given a speedy retirement when his agency was "privatized," complete with a gold watch. His life is so barren that removing even the empty activities of his job makes it not worth living, so he attempts suicide by sticking his head in a gas oven - just as a gas service strike gets underway. Frustrated, he takes his savings from the bank and heads off to hire a contract killer to take his life from him. Then he really begins to enjoy life - so much so, that now he wants to avoid his imminent demise. -- Clarke Fountain
